Easter is the most important Christian feast. It celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
About 4000 years ago, shepherds celebrated a spring feast by cooking a young animal and marking tents with blood for protection.
The word Passover means "passage." It remembers how God passed over the houses marked with lamb's blood in Egypt.
Passover also recalls important journeys: passage through marked houses, crossing the Red Sea, and the journey through the desert.
The English word "Easter" may come from a spring goddess. Historian St. Bede linked it to Eostre, a goddess of spring and light.
Easter does NOT have a fixed date. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.
Jewish Passover celebrates freedom from slavery in Egypt, while Christian Easter celebrates Jesus’ Resurrection and victory over death.
Easter lasts much longer than one day. The Easter season continues for 50 days until Pentecost.
The first 8 days after Easter are extra special. They are called the Octave of Easter, and each day is celebrated like Easter Sunday.
White is the Easter color. Priests wear white vestments to symbolize joy, celebration, and new life.
During Easter, a different prayer is used. Instead of the Angelus, Catholics pray Regina Coeli, celebrating Mary’s joy.
