If you are alone and choking:

Make a fist and place the thumb side just above your belly button.

Grasp your fist with your other hand.

Thrust forcefully inward and upward.

Alternatively, lean forcefully over the back of a chair, table edge, or railing to press your upper abdomen against the edge.

Helping an Adult or Child:

Stand behind the person. Wrap your arms around their waist.

Make a fist. Place the thumb side slightly above their belly button.

Grasp your fist with your other hand.

Press hard into the abdomen with a quick, upward thrust. Repeat until the object is expelled.

Helping an Infant (under 1 year):

Sit and hold the baby face down along your forearm, supporting their jaw and head. Rest your arm on your thigh.

Give up to 5 firm back slaps between the shoulder blades with the heel of your free hand.

If object isn't expelled, turn baby face up, still supporting the head.

Place 2 fingers in the middle of their chest bone. Give up to 5 quick chest thrusts. Repeat slaps and thrusts.
