Grade Crossing Regulations

Mandatory Stop Distance

The driver of a vehicle shall stop within 50 feet but not less than 15 feet from the nearest rail.

Prohibited Actions
  • No person shall drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate while it is closed or being opened/closed.
  • Stop required when electric signals give warning of train approach.
  • Stop required when a train is plainly visible and in hazardous proximity.
Heavy Equipment

Moving heavy equipment (crawlers, steam shovels, etc.) requires specific notice to the railroad station agent prior to crossing.
